WEEKE LOCAL HISTORY

Introduction

This is a web Site dedicated to the history of the parish of Weeke. Weeke is close to Winchester in Hampshire England and is in the upper half of Buddlesgate hundred.

Weeke is the first parish on leaving the city to the north west beyond where the original Roman wall was located. The church is at OS map reference SU 468 304. The parish is approximately bounded by the Roman road to Cirencester (the modern Andover Road) and the Roman Road to Salisbury (the modern Sarum Road).

Weeke is not typical of the agricultural based parishes in Hampshire. It was originally a farming community with a ready market for produce in Winchester. Slowly the parish has changed in recent centuries from a small rural community to become an extension of Winchester as it has become a suburb of the City. It is now, early in the twenty first century, largely built on with little of the farming activity left and the major green space is on the Downs where The Royal Winchester Golf Club is based.

This site is a continually growing and updates will be recorded in site updates and some of the material is lacking in detail that hopefully will be expanded. I am always interested in feedback from readers particularly if they can correct or add to the content.
